A 60 minutes report yesterday demonstrated how sleep deprivation contributes to obesity....?

Actually, within the past week it was reported in the Washington Post that some researchers used data from the American Time Use Survey to undermine the common conception that people are not getting enough sleep, on average, which was based on previous (and less exhaustive) self-reporting surveys, which had possible methodological difficulties. it seems that there might be methodological problems with the reporting of sleep in the ATUS, also -- insomnia and other time in bed spent awake might not be identified well -- but the basic issue seems to be much more up in the air than was until recently thought. If, however, people *are* short on sleep on average, that situation might contribute to obesity, but, in my personal opinion, not as much as the quasi-addictive nature of high-fructose corn syrup and the tendency to get less exercise than did previous generations.
